Mile Markers

Daniel Okonkwo · I do not chase landmarks. I write down breakfast, missed connections, and the directions strangers actually give.

Lisbon · Alfama

The tram waits a long time at the corner

The driver stepped down to move a cardboard box from the rails. Someone in the car opened a tin of sardines. The smell was honest and I did not mind it. I walked the rest of the hill until the river showed, folded my coat, and sat on it.

Evening made every crack in the tiles visible. A boy wrote his name in chalk and wiped it off. He said it was not for visitors.

A cat that would not come closer

The car from Sanjo was almost empty. I bought a grilled bun on the bridge; the crust split and the bean paste was too sweet. Across the path a woman broke snacks into crumbs. The cat stayed in the shadow of the rail and did not move either way.

Wind came down the river with the smell of weed. I had folded the map wrong and marked the stop one station early. I did not turn back. The early stop had a shop that sold only tea. The owner asked if I wanted to sit until they locked the door.

New Orleans · Magazine Street

Red beans on a Monday

The cook told me to wait until the pot stopped sounding like rain. I did. Two students at the next table were copying the same paragraph. Outside, a streetcar bell cut through the wet oak leaves.

When I left, the sidewalk had already dried in patches. I slid the ticket stub into page three of the notebook. It still has a mark of cayenne on it.
